Nigerian Univerisities Commission

The National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria is a government commission promoting quality higher education in Nigeria. The Commission was established in 1962 as an advisory agency in the Cabinet Office. In 1974, it became a statutory body under the Federal Ministry of Education as a parastatal (government-owned corporation) with a Governing Council.

Since its establishment, the Commission has transformed from a small office in the Cabinet Office to an important arm of government in the area of development and management of university education in Nigeria. Its mandate includes:

  1. Granting approval for all academic programmes being run in Nigerian universities;
  2. Granting approval for the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programmes in Nigerian universities;
  3. Ensuring quality assurance of all academic programmes offered in Nigerian universities; and
  4. Channel for all external support to the Nigerian universities
As part of its functions, the NUC has adopted NEVS as a platform where accurate students enrolment, academic performances and certification in Federal, States and Privates universities can be accessed and verified from one secured platform- NEVS, in real time.
